The 2025 UK ‘Last of the Rose Gold’ Full Sovereign, manufactured by The Royal Mint, marks the final year this iconic coin will be crafted in the distinctive rose gold finish.

The reverse of the coin features Benedetto Pistrucci’s iconic St George and the Dragon design, as featured on the first sovereign struck in 1817. The obverse of the coin bears the uncrowned portrait of King Charles III, designed by sculptor Martin Jennings.

Due to its long history, the UK Sovereign coin is the flagship coin of The Royal Mint. A triumph of numismatic art, many consider The Sovereign the ‘chief coin of the world’.

In the past, gold sovereigns contained a higher proportion of silver, which gave them a more golden hue. However, since 2000, The Royal Mint has used more copper in the alloy, creating the pinkish or rose gold appearance seen in modern coins. The 2025 edition will be the final year The Royal Mint produces this iconic coin in its distinctive rose gold finish, marking the end of an era.

The 2025 gold Half Sovereign coin from The Royal Mint. The 2025 Half Sovereign features the official portrait of His Majesty King Charles III by Martin Jennings, and the classic George and Dragon design by Pistrucci.

Like all Sovereigns, the 2025 gold Half Sovereign coin is struck in 22-carat gold with the remaining metal being made up of both silver and copper. Historically, sovereigns included a greater amount of silver giving them a lighter colour but since the year 2000 the Royal Mint incorporated more copper into the alloy giving modern sovereigns their distinctive pinkish or rose colour. The 2025 edition will be the last year that this classic coin is issued in its unique rose gold finish, marking the close of an era.

Half sovereigns weigh 3.99 grams, and are both VAT-free and exempt from Capital Gains Tax, making them an excellent choice for investors or for gifting.
